Mike Johnson’s Funding Move Sparks MAGA Fury : ‘Caved’

Multiple MAGA supporters are angry over the short-term spending bill that House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Sunday to avoid a government shutdown, which does not include a Donald Trump-backed election measure.
The stopgap move, set to fund the government through December 20, notably excludes The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), which would require proof of citizenship in the voter registration process.
Last week, Trump publicly urged Republicans to allow a government shutdown if they are unable to include the SAVE Act in the government funding bill.”
Several conservative figures have spoken out against Johnson for the move, saying he has “caved” and calling him a “RINO (Republican In Name Only) disappointment.”
Media personality Nick Sortor said: “Speaker Mike Johnson has CAVED, and will bring a Continuing Resolution (CR) to the floor WITHOUT the SAVE Act, per Punchbowl.
“Of course he did. Johnson’s weak, spineless, and owned by the democrats. The Biden Harris regime is DEEPLY opposed to any election integrity bills, so Johnson won’t bother pushing back against them.
“This CR will continue Pelosi-era spending up until Christmas time, when Johnson will likely pass another CR. House GOP leadership is an absolute joke.”
MAGA activist Laura Loomer, who has spoken out against Johnson in the past, said: “I see I was right about Mike Johnson.”
She wrote on X: “And I see I was right about the GOP failing to protect our elections. No Save Act. Don’t get your hopes up for the GOP. As we have seen, the GOP only knows how to fail and disappoint. They can’t even stop illegals from voting in our elections.
“Nothing has changed since 2020. The sooner you come to terms with the GOP’s desire to drop the ball the more grounded in reality you will become. It’s so pathetic how inept these people are. They need to constantly lose so that they have something to fundraise over.”
Political commentator Joey Mannarino, who describes himself as a “conservative populist” referenced Loomer’s warnings about Johnson.
He said: “I remember when Mike Johnson became Speaker and everyone (including me) was saying how amazing he would be and what an improvement he would be over McCarthy.
“LauraLoomer was the lone voice against him and saying that he’d be a RINO disappointment. I remember saying ‘I hope Loomer is wrong this time.’ And alas, she wasn’t wrong. As usual.”
Johnson, who helped file a brief in a lawsuit that sought to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, replaced former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last October, after McCarthy was ousted by a vote of House Republicans.
In a letter to his Republican colleagues on Sunday, Johnson wrote: “While this is not the solution any of us prefer, it is the most prudent path forward under the present circumstances.” He went on to warn of the political risks that come with a government shutdown so close to an election.
He added that the three-month Continuing Resolution (CR) is intended “to prevent the Senate from jamming us with a bill loaded with billions in new spending and unrelated provisions,” and that the legislation is “a very narrow, bare-bones CR including only the extensions that are absolutely necessary.”
Newsweek has contacted Johnson, via email, for a response to the criticism he is facing. It has also contacted Trump’s team for further comment.
The former President wrote on Truth Social last Wednesday: “If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form.”
That was after the House failed to pass a six-month Republican government funding plan that incorporated the SAVE Act, when 14 Republicans joined Democrats in rejecting Johnson’s original plan.
The new bill is expected to reach the House floor by midweek, giving lawmakers a narrow window to pass the legislation before it moves to the Senate for consideration.
